Generation of power for use by berthed ships The primary engine is shut down while the ship is at berth, however, the auxi liary engines and boilers are required to operate over the time. Auxiliary engines are used to produce electricity for ship’s general systems such as heating, pump, cooking and lighting, concurrently, the boilers can provide the heat for water system, cargo heating and fuel heating[5]. Nevertheless, the auxiliary engine should be de-energized if the berth can provide enough electrical energy to run the whole system operating within the ship since most ports are located close to the population so reducing the emission from the ships at berth is needed[6]. 1.1.3. Trucks and trains operating near or within the port Most trucks and trains generally use the diesel engine to run the whole system, the major air pollutant emitting from these types of vehicles are carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2) and particulate emission (PM).
